**NEW for 2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR: Proficiency Based Grades will be reviewed to determine eligibility.
At Barre City Elementary and Middle School academics come first. We recognize that being a student athlete can be a challenge. It is vitally important that our student athletes are able to find a balance between academics and athletics. All student athletes are held to an academic standard. This standard is measured at progress reports, quarter grades, and at the time of basketball tryouts.
All students are given a fresh start to begin their Fall 2017 season eligibility. Eligibility for basketball will be determined by a student’s grades at the time of tryouts. (Students may still tryout; however, academic ineligibility may be a deciding factor if cuts need to be made.)
IN ORDER TO BE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY SPORT: -a student may not receive one B (Beginning) in any standard of Habits of Learning in any class -a student may not receive two or more D (Developing) in any standard of Habits of Learning in any class
The student will be notified by school personnel (the athletic/activities director, a principal, a teacher adviser, coach, etc.) when Report Cards come out. If the student becomes ineligible to participate in the sport, they will be placed on ACADEMIC PROBATION (details below)and follow the procedures for TWO WEEKS.
ACADEMIC PROBATION FOR TWO WEEKS: -A student may still practice/meet with his/her team/group.
-There is NO participation in games/contests/competitions. (may sit on bench at home games)
-There are NO early dismissals to travel with team or group to away events.
-The student will be given a weekly progress report (see Athletic Director for a copy) to be filled out by their teacher for each of their failing classes.
(**Note: this is the student’s responsibility, NOT the Athletic Director’s or teacher’s, to get each teacher of “failing” grade to sign the report for SATISFACTORY PROGRESS.)
-The student must improve grades by the last day of the two week probationary period in order to become eligible again to participate in the sport.
-If the student’s grades have improved by the end of the two week period (or even better, by week one), the student is granted academic eligibility and will remain on the team without any restrictions.
-If the student’s grades have not improved by the end of the two week probationary period, they will not be allowed to return to the team.
Note: If a student is on academic probation, he/she may only gain eligibility at the first progress report of each quarter. Students who are not on academic probation CANNOT lose their eligibility based upon progress reports. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Practice Times for Winter Season Monday-Friday (*Unless otherwise noted by Athletic Director or Coach):
